While most are busy with the upcoming Barangay Election, we on the other hand is planning for the last lap of this year’s summer season. In awe with some post from social media platforms featuring Hermana Menor Island located at Sta. Cruz (a first class municipality in the province of Zambales, approximately 154 km. away from the highly urbanized Olongapo City, where we are currently residing and working), our destination was decided.
We went last Sunday (5/14/2018). Call time was 2AM because a friend of ours tipped us regarding the availability of the cottages and nice camping spot if ever we went late because of the current hype made by social media users who already experienced the island making it famous for the rest of the world to see. Approximately 5AM, we are already in Lipay, Sta. Cruz, Zambales. We reached Hermana Menor Island at approximately 6AM; it was a 45-minute boat ride from Barangay Lipay.
As we set foot on the island, we are delighted by what we see. Just like the pictures from social media, the place was indeed drop-dead gorgeous. Before we fully indulge ourselves in the charm of Hermana Menor Island, we first secure our belongings. To our surprise, cottages were occupied despite our early measures. We managed to rent a table for our foods and we set up one tent to secure our stuffs.
On the run, we went to the sandbar to have some pictures while there are still few people. The white sand was so good in pictures (don’t get me wrong, in person too). The scenery was picture perfect from any angle. The variation of colors was palatable, proving that our Almighty was the finest artist (He knows where to put the colors, perfectly). Playing with action cameras, we plunged into the crystal clear water. One can try snorkeling, enjoy the actions under the sea, and swim along with different marine species.
Contented swimming on the sandbar site, we decided to roam the island. Be aware that a former politician privately owned the island so there are restricted areas. Be respectful and do not wander in these areas. In addition, drone piloting is strictly prohibited.
We went on the other side of the island, where trees are just near the shore. There are sheep freely roaming on this side, do not stress them and just let them be. We plunged on this side too (thinking there might be some difference from the sandbar site, just trolling).

The moment we felt something rumbling on our tummies, we went back to the campsite to have our lunch. The setup was KKB/BYOF (as in “kanya-kanyang baon/bring your own food”) resulting in plenty of foods. We have Adobong manok, Pork Steak and freshly cooked coral grouper caught by Kuya Andy (insert cheering crowd). For desert, we have homemade Buko ice candy, so ayun, wala talaga sa grupong ito ang magugutom. May mga paprutas din si Mayor, such as indian mango, singkamas (jicama) at malalaking bayabas (guava).
With a bellyful, we went back to the other side of the island. This time we are looking for a site where the shore is somehow shaded by trees. We sat and lay there, soaked and tickled by the little waves. Unending conversations, absurd jokes coming from everywhere, burst out laughing, and modeling 101 are just a few of the ways we had quality time. We spent the remaining time here and departed at exactly 3PM. They also prohibit overnight stay so most will leave around 2PM-3PM.
Nothing beats having a marvelous summer getaway with friends and not minding getting tanned.
